out of necessity, an opportunity to enhance

The deterioration of the South Transept window necessitated a building conservation project, involving masonry, plaster and glazing repairs. However, we took the opportunity to enhance the building, by replacing the plain leaded glazing with a new window containing coloured glass. Church architect, Emma Mullen (during her employment at St Ann's Gate Architects) designed a new 'Celebration Window', which has transformed the South Transept, with its playful movement of coloured light across the interior.

I
community impact

The South Transept literally faces towards the Market Square and as such, the new window aims to connect with the wider context of Ringwood and its community. The colours of the new window take inspiration from the New Forest, whilst the simple motifs based on a traditional diamond leaded window, ensure that the window was cost effective for the PCC to commission.

The completed window received the Community Design Award from the Ringwood Society in 2023, in recognition of the design's positive contribution to the wider community.

II
management & delivery

In her role as church architect, Emma was responsible for advising and guiding the PCC through a complex approvals process, which required careful negotiation and case making, with specialist input and robust justification.

The new window was beautifully made by the glaziers of Salisbury Cathedral Stained Glass Department, with masonry repairs by Colin Avery. The work was procured under coordinated contracts, requiring organisation and contract management by Emma in her role as project and church architect.

III

Emma suggested that, instead of replacing the plain leaded glass with the same, we might consider a simple design in coloured glass, which would still allow lots of natural light into the church. We were delighted with the designs she provided. Getting permission took several years and had several difficulties. Emma remained patient and professional at all times… We were absolutely delighted with the result, which enhances our church with something of our time but which sits so well with our existing significant stained glass. We now call it, most appropriately, The Celebration Window.
